How to find your water meter and turn off the water

If your hot water system bursts, you’ve got a pipe or tap leaking in your home or you suspect a leak, learn where your water mains are located and turn off the water to prevent any/further water damage until your plumber arrives.Where is my water meter and water mains tap?Your water meter and water mains isolating valve will generally be a plastic rectangular box in the ground located in your front yard near the footpath, possibly on the same side of the property as your front tap.How to turn off the water mains

1. Unscrew the water meter lid with a screwdriver
2. Look for a lever (or tap “T” hand if it’s an old system) running parallel to the water service
3. Turn the lever so that it is 90 to the water service (if you have a tap “T” hand turn it clockwise)
4. Try turning on a hose or tap in your yard to check that the water has been correctly shut off.
5. If your water meter is damaged or you are unable to turn the water off, call Unitywater to fix the problem.

Note that if you have not opened your water meter in a while there may be spiders and bugs or grass and dirt filling the box so take care when you open it up.
